As you’ve probably figured out there are a number of different motorcycles available for different riding styles.
The first question you need to ask yourself is “what kind of riding am I going to do”?
The second question is “what is my price range”?
I’m sure most people didn’t jump in a car and just start driving so why do that on a motorcycle? Most of our first cars were a used and definitely not the car of your dreams, so why go out and spend $20,000.00 on your first motorcycle?
You’ll find that motorcycle prices will range from $500.00 to $30,000.00 depending on make and model. No matter what price you pay for a motorcycle, you have to make sure the motorcycle you pick fits you. I don’t care how far you expect to ride, if you’re not comfortable then you’re not going to enjoy it. If your feet can’t reach the ground while the motorcycle is standing up right and not moving, you should probably find a different motorcycle or make the necessary mechanical adjustments so you are comfortable.
If you’re buying a used motorcycle there’s a few things you should look at:
* Tires: Inspect the tires for cracks (otherwise known as rot), wear, nails, screws or other abnormalities.
* Brakes: Not everyone is a mechanic so just make sure the pads are at least 3mm thick.
* Chain: Wear and Rust
* Belt: Cracks or worn teeth
* Find out what the motorcycle is actually worth. I’ve found for buying and selling the NADA and Motorcycle Consumer News listings are the most accurate for used motorcycles.
* Where to buy? Local dealer, Craigslist, Ebay or try the local paper.
* What ever motorcycle you buy make sure it’s safe ride.
Enjoy the ride and the friends you meet along the way.
